PicoPango settings
==================

This package changes PicoPango's two settings, the sound engine and
the volume: with the PANGOSET program in DOS, or with the small MIDI
files from anything that can play a MIDI file.

PicoPango stores a new setting a few seconds after the music stops,
and keeps it when the power is off.

PANGOSET.COM (DOS)
------------------

Sends the settings through the sound card's MIDI port (MPU-401), the
same way a game's music reaches PicoPango.

PANGOSET GU sound engine GU-Wave (wavetable, the default)
  PANGOSET FM sound engine FM-Classic
PANGOSET VOL 100 volume, 0 to 127 (100 is the default)
PANGOSET FM VOL 90 several settings at once
PANGOSET /P:300 GU another MPU-401 port (hex)

The port comes from the P value of the BLASTER variable if there is
one, otherwise 330. PANGOSET /? shows the help.

If PANGOSET says no MPU-401 answered, check the MIDI port in the sound
card's setup and give it with /P. PANGOSET runs on any PC, 8086 and up.
It ends with errorlevel 0 when the settings were sent, 1 for a mistake
on the command line and 2 when no MPU-401 answered.

The settings MIDI files
-----------------------

Each file holds a single settings message and no music, so you will not
hear anything when you play one - that is normal.

ENG0.MID sound engine GU-Wave (wavetable, the default)
  ENG1.MID sound engine FM-Classic
  VOL000.MID volume 0 (silent)
  VOL032.MID volume 32
  VOL064.MID volume 64
  VOL100.MID volume 100 (the default)
  VOL127.MID volume 127 (full)

On a sound card (DOS): play the file with any DOS MIDI file player that
sends to the sound card's MPU-401 MIDI port (usually 330).

On USB (Windows, macOS, Linux): open it in a MIDI player or sequencer
and make sure its MIDI output is set to "PicoPango GM Synth".

What is inside
--------------

Both PANGOSET and the files send one SysEx message per setting:

  F0 7D 50 52 <setting> <value> F7

  setting 01 = sound engine: 00 GU-Wave, 01 FM-Classic
  setting 02 = volume: 00 to 7F (0 to 127)

Any program that can send SysEx can send these messages directly.
